Bac-to-san Ben’s Burning Question?

Just the other day there was an incident that happened at Blush, I thought you may like to hear about and hopefully find it as humorous as we did. One of our long time clients, lets call him Ben, came in for his monthly maintenance which includes a Men’s Style cut and some waxing. Now, Ben is a rugged sort of bloke that’s worked in the outback for years, drilling for oil and working his arse off. So when he comes to Blush he just soaks up every minute of pampering he can and he’s always been a favourite with the girls with his rugged charm and good sense of humour.

But on this day things didn’t quite go to plan, so please let me tell you more…

As Ben had been coming to Blush for years, he was on auto pilot at the time the incident happened. Normally, we always get the waxing services out the way before hair or pampering takes place. However, on this occasion we had to style Ben’s hair first, followed by his waxing as we were so heavily booked and it was the only way we could have fit him in. So after his shampoo, wash and tingling head massage , he was feeling on cloud 9 and was escorted to his chair.

Up until now things were going pretty smoothly…

Ben then sat down and a with a small oversight from the stylist, who forgot to tell him we don’t have wheels on our hair chairs anymore, Ben then proceeded to try and pull himself closer to the mirror and with his huge pecs and strong hands he almost pulled the whole hair station over and spilt the Marvy Jar (pictured above) all over his lap…..oops.

But here’s where the problem starts…

Now, the Marvy Jar is full of Bac-to-san (pure Alcohol) which is used for sterilizing the hair scissors, combs etc and now Ben’s jeans were covered in the potent liquid. After the usual apologies and fussing around, Ben was offered a robe while his jeans were sent to the Blush laundry department. But this rugged guy wouldn’t budge and sat there, drank his coffee and pretended as nothing had ever happened. After receiving his razor sharp and trendy style cut, Ben was ready for his waxing which normally takes about 30 minutes in which time Ben is face down and has a little fluff taken off his back and shoulders. Now this tough guy doesn’t even flinch when having his back waxed, mainly due to the expertise of our highly trained therapist’s, although on this occasion the therapist noticed he was sort of wriggling around a lot and letting out a little moaning noise.

And that’s when Ben let it out…

Ben said: “Hey Kel, do you mind if I ask you a question?”

Kel replied: “Yeah, how can I help?”

Ben said: “Hey you know that BLUE STUFF in the jars at the hair station – what is that?”

Kel said: “Oh that’s Bac-to-san.”

Ben said: “Is it very strong?”

Kel replied: “Hell yeah, it’s pure alcohol”

Ben said: “WOW, I hope you don’t mind me saying, but that stuff been BURNING MY BALLS for the last hour…”lol

And they both continued to belly laugh for at least the next couple of minutes…you’re a very funny man Ben.

Is Your man in desperate need of a makeover?

Whether they’re wearing suits that are a size or two too large, they have a really bad haircut or they wear socks with sandals (nooooo!), you can see the hipness just under the surface.

So how to make over your guy?

If he’s the sensitive sort, I believe in the subtle approach: buy him a great pair of jeans or a bag full of men’s grooming products or suggest he try out your stylist at your salon instead of his regular barber. Point out hairstyles you like on famous guys and tell him, “Oh you would look hot in that haircut!”

As women do, men also respond to flattery, so let me tell what to do…

This also works with jeans, “Honey, your butt would look great in these,” and getting them to wear a smaller size suit, “You have a great body but it’s lost in your suit.”

Here are some of my favorite tips I’ve learned over the years..

I love a few from GQ’s 25 style rules to live by:

According to GQ, 3-button suits are out, and 2-buttons are in.
Short sleeve dress suits with a tie are an absolute no-no.
Thin ties are more modern than fat ties.
Many guys wear their suits a size or two too large. Find out if yours is.
If your guy suffers from nicks and cuts when shaving, GQ suggests you encourage him to shave in the shower. The water and steam will soften his face. Once he’s finished shaving, he should skip the cheapie aftershaves which are full of alcohol and fragrances and try a balm.
Men can be super self-conscious about hair loss. If your guy is sporting a bologna patch (the round, bald spot at the back of the head), or is making sad attempts at comb-overs, he’s got some options. Some men find success in hair plugs (think Jude Law & Matthew McConaughey!), but I prefer a simple, number one or shaved head, which is super sexy.
Personally, I’m not a fan of men shaving or waxing their chest hair, I have no problem with a hairy chest but I do have a problem with a sandpaper chest. If your dude hates his man fluff or wants to tame it for the beach, suggest he trim it with a hair trimmer.

From Chef’s to Big Tough Miners (FIFO), Men are getting pampered all over Perth…

With almost 20% of our 15,000 clients a year being are men, it’s no wonder businesses like ours are training our staff to be very receptive to our male clients. Lets face it, this female dominated domain still comes with prejudices and stigmas in many salon across the country…

So let me explain how we’re different…

At Blush it’s not by luck that so many of our clients were male. Although we’ve never really targeted men specifically we’ve always made men feel really comfortable and welcome at Blush. Just last year, 57% of our male clients had a spa treatment, e.g. spa package, massage, facial or sports pedicure etc., the other 43% purchased a gift for their partner or family members, friends etc. most of our spa packages are suitable for men or women.

Although men only make up a small % of clients the numbers are certainly growing…

Couples packages are becoming a real favourite… It’s something you can definately do with your partner and although most Male clients come to Blush for the first time are a little apprehensive, the moment they walk in the door all there concerns are taken away. Our warm and friendly staff always ensure our male clients are very well looked after.
